City of London dentists help parents wean their children off thumb sucking

August 23rd, 2011

It is a common habit of young children to suck their thumb. This does not always happen only at night, sometimes young children do so during the day as well. It truly does become a habit and it can be very difficult to stop doing it. But it is necessary, as a parent to try and get your child away from thumb sucking by a certain age so that it does not have an adverse effect on the way their teeth develop.

Sucking your thumb night after night (or day after day) affects the way that your teeth are positioned. Essentially the commonest form of this is when the front teeth are pushed outwards by the frequent presence of the thumb. Having teeth which are misaligned in this way can have consequences for the oral health of the patient.

Not only do misaligned teeth not look as good as teeth which are straight and in line with one another, there can be other complications. The act of grinding one’s teeth during sleep is called bruxism and dentists have found a link between misaligned teeth and the condition. Bruxism itself can cause the erosion of tooth enamel, leading to tooth decay and also complications with the temporomandibular joint (usually shortened to the TMJ). Teeth which are too bunched up in one place can also lead to cavities because it is harder to clean them properly, ye t plaque can still affect them.

The consequences of all this may be that a young person has to wear a brace because of the effects of sucking their thumb. If you are looking for tips as to gently wean your child away from thumb sucking, your City of London dentist might be able to help, or you can consult a child care specialist in your area.

City of London dentists solve teeth problems by fitting braces

December 4th, 2010

Braces are an effective method used to correct problems with your teeth. If your teeth are misaligned or crooked or your bite is not correct, your dentist might advise that you have a brace fitted. The improvements that braces can offer are long term and will affect your confidence, giving you pride in your smile. The problems solved by braces can also mean that you will have better oral hygiene.

Braces do not have to be fitted in childhood. Although that is the best time for braces because children’s teeth are still developing, braces can be fitted at any age and are available to correct a variety of problems. If your teeth are too close together or have too many gaps between them, braces can be used. Braces can even achieve widening of the palate or jaw and, in some cases, can even reshape teeth themselves. You may need to wear your brace for up to three years but advances in technology mean that sometimes treatment only lasts for six weeks.

Generally dentists will take x-rays of your mouth and then moulds and impressions of your teeth in order to construct your brace but digital technology can sometimes mean that moulds and impressions are no longer necessary. Traditional braces involve brackets being attached to your teeth and wires threaded through these brackets. The wires are what your dentist will adjust in order to move your teeth gradually over time at regular appointments.

Increasingly there are other options for those who need their teeth adjusted and ‘invisible’ and friction-free braces are now widely available. Your City of London dentist can give you more information about braces and how they can solve your teeth problems.

Cosmetic dentistry from London W1 dentists produces perfect smiles

December 2nd, 2010

The social occasions which you engage in can be made so much easier if you feel confident about your smile. Your smile is one of the first things that a person will see when talking to you and can be used to make other people feel at ease. There are many reasons why you might feel embarrassed about your smile, such as having misaligned teeth, unsightly metal fillings or a crooked smile but they can all be solved by dentists offering cosmetic dentistry techniques.

The procedures which comprise cosmetic dentistry are many and varied. Veneers , crowns and fillings can be fitted, your gums can be reshaped and your teeth whitened. Thanks to advances in technology, these processes are far speedier than they were in the past. Widely used CEREC techniques allow veneers to be constructed and fitted in just one session at your dentist by utilising 3D images to examine your teeth.

These techniques can be combined and carried out in conjunction to make a ‘smile makeover’ package. For example you may wish to have a metal filling replaced using the more discreet finish of cosmetic bonding at the same time as have a porcelain veneer over a broke down tooth. CEREC allows these processes to be carried out with incredible speed and you probably won’t even have to wear inconvenient temporary veneers while you wait.

Many of these techniques are far more affordable than many people think. The technology used, while being cutting edge, actually mean that some of the more expensive aspects of dental treatment in the past have been eradicated, such as lab fees to develop traditional x-rays. Interest free payment plans can be taken up to decrease the burden of cost. Contact your London W1 dentist today for more information about cosmetic dentistry procedures.

The Lumineer is a great solution for minor teeth problems, by a City of London dentist

August 8th, 2010

The Lumineer is a veneer that has been successfully used in dental practices for a few years; it is a new design of veneer that has taken a lot of the work needed to fit one out of the dental process. A City of London dentist says that the best feature of the Lumineer is that it is very thin and therefore it doesn`t require any preparation work prior to being fitted. It can be used in much the same way as a conventional veneer, and indeed it does the same job on the usual defects of a tooth that a veneer is fitted to. The problems it helps to solve are misaligned, cracked and chipped teeth; however its main use is to hide a discoloured tooth or teeth. A client can have a series of Lumineer`s fitted at one sitting, as all the dentist needs to do is to cement it into position, it takes around 20 minutes to fit one and for it to set hard. The tooth can be used in the usual manner within a few hours, and no one would even know you had a veneer on. The expense of a veneer like the Lumineer has come down a bit due to the manufacturing and fitting costs. A normal veneer involves having a lot of preparation work done to the tooth, and it is also done under a local anaesthetic, that cost is illuminated when the Lumineer is chosen to solve your tooth problem, and it`s not a day too soon.

Inman Aligner and Invisalign; which is best? A City of London dentist advises

August 4th, 2010

The Inman aligner and the Invisalign braces are not exactly the same, says a City of London dentist. The one big difference is that the Inman Aligner isn’t much use at straightening the back teeth. Both are very good at what they do and the whole concept and design is a brilliant dental innovation. They start life as a session with your dentist who will take a series of digital pictures and digital X-rays. These are fed into a computer program that produces the entire individual process that you will go through in order to correct your misaligned teeth. An orthodontist makes a series of the specially designed braces, they look like a sporting gum shield and are worn over the teeth in much the same fashion. Here is where some other differences occur, especially in the way the springs and pulleys are incorporated into the inside of the brace. The Invisalign has all its pieces hidden on the inside, that way it is almost invisible to the naked eye and is how it gets its name. The Inman Aligner has some of its pieces on the inside and some on the inner back, it also has a thin bar holding it together, and this runs across the front so it isn’t that invisible. Both are also removable at any time for eating or cleaning of the teeth, they are changed every two weeks and your dentist will do this for you at a progress appointment where they will keep you up to date on the way it is progressing.

A London W1 dentist explains the facts about Invisalign treatment

February 15th, 2010

Invisalign is the method of straightening misaligned teeth in both children and adults. It is a cross between a gum shield and a brace, but is best described in layman’s terms as a removable brace. Being transparent in appearance the brace is simply fitted over the top or bottom teeth, and left to do its job while the patient goes about their daily routine. The brace is changed usually every fortnight and works exactly the same way as a conventional brace, albeit that it is removable and replaceable by the patient. The problem with conventional braces is that they are cumbersome and awkward; the patient finds it difficult at times to carry out simple oral hygiene care. The pressure of common braces is also a damaging factor on the teeth as it often causes more wear on them. The Invisalign method allows the patient to remove the device for eating, drinking and cleaning of the teeth, it also allows X-rays to be taken which aren’t possible with conventional braces. However, one disadvantage is that the dentist has to rely heavily on the discipline of the patient to keep the device in place for the maximum period each day. The treatment isn’t available or recommended to all patients, some teeth that are particularly misaligned will not benefit from using an Invisalign brace. It is made from a polyurethane material and this can cause an allergic reaction in certain patients, although that is very rare. A London W1 dentist says that most western countries are in favour of the use of these braces, especially in children who traditionally have been subject to bullying in schools. Adults favour them as well as it allows them to remove the braces when they are socialising or networking.

Get Treatment for Your Jaw Joints in Central London

March 13th, 2009

If you notice a popping sound when you open your mouth, it may be time to ask your dentist about treatments for TMJ disease. In a similar way, if you tend to have headaches, facial pain, or neck pain they may all be cause by some type of malfunction of your jaw joints. For example, if you have a neck injury, grind your teeth, or have misaligned teeth, these can all cause hidden damage to your jaw joints. Fortunately, when you visit a dentist in Central London, you will be able to receive treatment that will ease, or even eliminate your pain altogether.

In order to begin treatment, your doctor may need to conduct some tests in order to determine the cause of your jaw pain. Typically, this will involve taking xrays, as well as asking you a series of questions. Your dentist may also want to do some additional testing to see if the pain is being caused by gum disease, or other issues that cause refractory pain in the facial nerves.

Once your dentist is able to find the cause of your pain, it will be possible to treat your condition. This may include providing you with a mouth guard to prevent teeth grinding. If your dentist determines that misaligned teeth are causing your jaw pain, you may need to have braces, or other devices that will move your teeth into the correct position. Today, there are a number of dental alignment aides that cannot even be seen, let alone felt while you are wearing them.

When seeking treatment for jaw pain, it is important to realize that there are several major nerves that run through your face and neck. As a result, your pain may actually be located in the jaw, or in some other area. Therefore, your dentist will need to eliminate a number of possible issues with diagnostic testing in order to solve your problem. Fortunately, you will find that treatment for TMJ disorders will not be any worse or distressing than any other procedure designed to improve your dental health.

Your Central London Dental Clinic is now offering the six month smile. An alternative to regular orthodontic braces and Invisalign, the braces and wires used for this procedure are tooth coloured and are hardly noticeable. This procedure is recommended for patients over 15 years old that have imperfect smiles, misaligned teeth, and/or spaces and crowding of their teeth. Recently, many types of braces and clear devices have been used to straighten teeth. One of the latest being Invisalign.
Different types of braces have been used in the U.S., and are now being offered in the U.K. in Central London. They do away with the lengthy orthodontic procedure, taking between 6-9 months to complete. London W1 Dental Clinic Treats Teeth Grinding

September 6th, 2008

Bruxism is the term used by dentists referring to the act of teeth grinding. This problem can be successfully treated in London W1 dental clinic. Teeth grinding usually mainly while one is sleeping and they are unaware of the problem until some damage to the teeth are done. Many causes exist for teeth grinding including: malpositioned or misaligned teeth; stress, and jaw discrepancies. Teeth grinding also occur in children from their teeth hitting edge-to-edge, and not biting together properly. This usually improves when the adult teeth come into the child’s mouth. However, your dentist will suggest the proper care for your child, and could also help to resolve these teeth grinding problems in both you and your child, if required. Thus, it is important to have dental check-ups.Although teeth grinding is not usually considered a major problem, it may instigate problems, such as mouth, jaw and facial pain. Teeth grinding can also occur because of faulty dental restorations, ill-fitting partial or full dentures, missing teeth, or teeth prematurely biting together. Your dentist will check your bite, and examine your mouth for premature wear patterns, or make study models of your mouth to better observe where you teeth may be hitting prematurely. An bite equilibration is then performed or your dentist or the dental laboratory may fabricate either a customized soft rubbery appliance or hard clear acrylic appliance for you to wear as either a diagnostic aid or as treatment for your teeth grinding, or both. Your dentist may also refer you to a specialist, depending on the degree that you grind your teeth, or the type of treatment that you require. There are many different types of therapy available for teeth grinding, and these should be discussed between you and your London W1 dentist. So, make sure to visit your London W1 dental clinic for a consultation!
