It is very easy to hit the panic button and go overboard when something starts to go wrong in our mouths in central London. We can quite easily get carried away and try to rectify the problem overnight by throwing all of the dental products on the shop shelves at it- as it is when we discover we have bad breath. But what a situation like this needs is not a knee jerk reaction but a calm plan and a cool head in order to reverse it. Things need to be worked out, such as your diet and lifestyle. Then you need a hygienist to come in and analyse the state of your mouth, repair you and then inform you where you have been going wrong in the past. There is a pretty good chance that gum disease is involved in some way and has been contributing to the cause of your bad breath by helping to dry up the saliva in your mouth. By throwing an over zealous attack at the problem with dental products can only lead to further problems, you need subtlety not ferocity. Some of the agents that you find in toothpastes can add to the drying out process so you need to be careful at what you choose, and harsh brushing needs to stop as well as you can do more damage than good to the gums. The worst things you can use though are alcohol based mouthwashes as these only mask the smell whilst the alcohol heaps further dryness to the mouth and gums.

If you a one of the unlucky ones to suffer from halitosis in west London, one of the causes of it may be linked to gum disease as well. Bad breath is a complex issue to sort out; it can be caused by bad diet, bad lifestyle and bad oral hygiene and all of these issues have to be looked into, as if something smells bad in the mouth, it could mean that something is drastically wrong somewhere within you. But one of the major causes of this is having a parched mouth which can leave your mouth very vulnerable to gum disease and this alone can leak toxins into the mouth and leave pungency in the air: the saliva is life’s natural defender against bacteria and without it, said bacteria is free to run amok. Throwing the obvious products at the problem can help with keeping your mouth clean, but they won’t address the problem of dry mouth overall, though they will help ease the gum disease. Once you have got the balance fired up again with your diet and curbed your bad habits a little, it will kick start you immune system and slowly the saliva will return. In the meantime, it is important to regenerate the fluid in your mouth by drinking lots of water, chewing lots of sugarless gum and sucking on lots of sugarless sweets as well- anything that will hydrate the mouth. Nipping the gum disease in the bud can also be aided with such alternatives as aloe vera, Echinacea, tea tree oil and clove oil: if worked into the gums by dropping your floss into the oils before hand can help sooth the gums and regenerate blood flow. Massaging the gums is also a good way to put life back into your gums.

To overcome bad breath in London W1, you must first understand what causes it in the first place. Usually poor oral hygiene is in the mix somewhere and if you are suffering from some form of tooth decay and/or gum disease, this can lead to toxins weeping into the mouth as well as drying up saliva. The mouth requires saliva to battle bacteria and without it, it is vulnerable to these problems a bad diet or heavy medication can also cause the mouth to dry out as well as those two ‘luxuries’ in life- smoking and drinking. One thing is for sure though- having bad breath means something somewhere is going badly wrong inside of you and needs to be looked at immediately. If you tackle your diet and habits first to rebuild your immune system, then the saliva levels should remain rich and while this is recovering you should try to keep the mouth as hydrated as much as you can by drinking plenty of water, sucking and chewing sugar free sweets and gums, whilst avoiding lot of caffeine based drinks. But it is in the oral hygiene based division where you should improve your game in order to have a chance of beating bad breath. From brushes to pastes to flossing, you should get the right tools and learn how to use them, and then back it up by trying out alternative methods such as incorporating herbal remedies into your daily regime.

What exactly lies behind the disease can still pose a bit of a mystery though: there was a consideration that cancer is handed down through the family and ignites when exposed to what life hurls at us and if you think about it, there is an element of truth in that- stress, poor diet, smoking and drinking are all the evils life lays on a plate to us and making the body and mouth vulnerable to illness. But one thing is for sure, we all know when something is wrong- jaw ache, repetitive ear aches and ulcers, swallowing issues and halitosis are sure signs that you should get yourself to the dentist for a proper synopsis. Time is of the essence here and the sooner you have been diagnosed after a series of tests, your treatment can begin and the better your chances of pulling through. Much of the treatment you receive will depend how advanced the problem is, but the three main treatments include radio and chemo therapy or actual physical therapy combined with a back-up of medication. But the battle doesn’t stop there as it depends on your strength to recover and the desire to change your lifestyle.

It is well known that sugary foods are a major cause of a number of dental ailments. But cutting them out of your diet can be really difficult if you have a sweet tooth. Thankfully dental scientists have been researching and found that there are quite a number of delicious sweet foods that can be eaten without putting your dental hygiene at risk.

The trouble with sugary food is that it causes a large amount of plaque bacteria to form in the mouth. This can cause not only decay in teeth but also leads to bad breath and gum disease. Bad breath might just be an inconvenience but gum disease can lead to teeth being lost from the mouth if the condition gets particularly severe.

Scientists have found that eating raisins can actually avert the onset of gum disease and bad breath because of the chemicals that they contain. They are also delicious and sweet and can be eaten without worrying whether you are compromising your oral health. The same properties have been found in cranberries and cranberry juice although because of its acidic qualities it is recommended that it is consumed mainly at meal times to lessen the erosive properties.

If you have a sweet tooth but are looking to replace your boiled sweets or chocolate with something less harmful to your mouth, ask your dentist in the West London area for some expert advice.

Bad breath is something that most of us dread. The thought of emitting unpleasant odours from your mouth while you speak and smile is an unpleasant one. But it happens to many of us from time to time. How to deal with it then?

The first thing to understand is how bad breath (medically known as halitosis) is caused. The presence of certain bacteria in the mouth gives off unpleasant odours. Most people will be able to rid their mouths of these bacterium by brushing and flossing as advised but sometimes it is not enough.

Brushing your tongue can also be helpful because the offending bacteria can thrive there too. Be gentle though as you don’t want to damage your tongue in the process. Some people favour the use of mouth wash because it kills bacteria in the mouth and leaves your breath smelling immediately fresher. There is a problem here though because mouth wash actually leaves your mouth rather dry, an ideal condition for bad breath to actually stick to teeth. So in freshening your breath in the short term, you might find that, in a few hours the bad breath has returned with a vengeance!

Chewing chewing gum can be helpful if you are in a situation where you cannot brush your teeth but are anxious about having fresh breath. It dislodges any left over food in the mouth, and stimulates saliva production which moistens the mouth, not to mention giving your breath the smell of whichever flavour the gum is.

Don’t be embarrassed about bad breath, talk to your City of London dentist and take the first step towards beating the problem once and for all. Just think about how much easier social occasions will be!

We all know how important it is to look after our teeth but how many of us pay enough attention to our gums? The fact is that gum disease is actually a greater cause of tooth loss than tooth decay itself. Many people in the UK have some form of gum disease and don’t even know about it, but it is worth dealing with so that it can’t progress into something much worse than just a bit of sensitivity in the mouth.

One of the least pleasant aspects of suffering from gum disease is that bad breath – or halitosis – can occur. The emission of unpleasant smells from the mouth can make social situations that bit more awkward and can lead to embarrassment and even withdrawal. Who wants to be covering their mouth at a wedding or business meeting?

Gum disease is usually caused by a build up of plaque on the gum line of teeth, which causes the gum to become infected. This will manifest itself in greater sensitivity when eating and drinking and a change in the colour of your gums from a healthy pink to more of a red colour. Bad breath might be another symptom too.

If you have bad breath it is best to get your mouth examined by a trained professional to see if gum disease is the cause. Gum disease can usually be rectified by tightening up your home oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing as recommended by your dentist. Sometimes special mouth washes can be used or it might simply be that a certain food you eat a lot of is causing halitosis.

Talk to your West London dentist for more advice about halitosis and gum disease.

There are few things more embarrassing than having unpleasant smells coming from your mouth. It can seriously inhibit your functioning in social situations where talking to people with ease is important. In the long term bad breath – or halitosis – can even cause psychological problems such as social withdrawal. Thankfully dentists can help with advice and treatment.

Gum disease can be a cause of bad breath. If, along with your bad breath, you are experiencing reddened and painful gums that appear swollen and lead to sensitivity when eating and drinking, it is possible that you have some form of gum disease. Gum disease can occur when plaque builds up on the gum line of teeth and your gums begin to become compromised.

It might be that your bad breath is caused by a poor home dental hygiene routine. If you are not brushing your teeth and flossing satisfactorily, aside from allowing plaque to build up, you will be allowing the debris from food to stay in the mouth and emit odour when you speak and even breathe.

You should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day and after meals or snacks too if necessary. This should always be done in conjunction with flossing to remove plaque that is in the hard to reach areas of the mouth such as between teeth. Special mouth washes can sometimes be used to treat bad breath, especially if it is caused by gum disease. Chewing chewing gum can help with the symptoms of bad breath by making sure that there is a more pleasant smell coming from your mouth but this is really just masking the problem and you should talk to your Central London dentist about treating the root cause.

This is because the sugar sticks to the teeth attracting bacteria that form plaque. When this bacteria decays it releases acids, which are the main cause of dental cavities. Because sweet food is often sticky due to the sugar it clings to the teeth and is difficult to remove. Sticky foods also get stuck in the gaps between teeth and decay releasing foul odours that cause halitosis. The main problem is that sweet foods are very difficult to resist, especially if you have a sweet tooth but there are alternatives.

Firstly, eating anything with a low sugar content is going to be better for your teeth than high sugar content food. There are many low sugar snacks available on the market that will be less damaging to your teeth. However, the reality is that most food will cause damage to your teeth eventually so the key to keeping your teeth healthy is damage limitation. By trying to eat foods with low sugar and replacing sugary sweets with natural sources of sugar you will be doing a lot to reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Foods like raisins and grapes make excellent sweet snacks and are less damaging to your teeth. It is also possible to buy sugar-free chewing gum that is still sweet and will satisfy your cravings. West London dentists will also be able to advise you what foods are less damaging for your teeth but still allow you to enjoy the odd treat. It is important however to remember that whatever you eat, cleaning teeth thoroughly by brushing and flossing daily will help to prevent damage form dental cavities.

Bad breath is caused by many factors; it is known medically as Halitosis and in its worst form is nasty, but avoidable. All dentists have a hygiene nurse on hand and getting advice is easy, quick and extremely necessary in people with certain medical conditions. Liver disease, Diabetes and Gastric problems can add to the cause of bad breath, as well as a lax regime in oral care. Often a new diet, cutting out alcohol, and taking the correct medication can take care of the other medical problems and bad breath, but most people with bad breath also need the assistance of a dental hygienist. Bacteria is a necessary part of our diet, it breaks down our food into fat and sugar for our bodies to be able to feed the organs, blood and muscles. This bacteria is also harmful to us, when it has done its job it then evolves into a new entity. This evolutionary bacteria produces acid in our mouths that attack the protective layers of enamel on our teeth, if left unchecked it will eventually turn hard and become tartar, which is harder to remove with conventional methods such as mouthwash, flossing and brushing. Tartar needs to be removed by a method called scaling, this is a procedure done at the dentist usually every 6 months. A dentist in London W1 advises that a regime of easy oral care will go some way to preventing tartar build up, and bad breath. Best of all is the news that our teeth will need less work on them in later years, and gum disease will find it almost impossible to breed in the mouth. We often hear the expression “Rocket Science it ain`t”, well guess what? It `ain`t rocket science` to follow a simple regime and ensure good oral hygiene.
