Bad breath is something which is now becoming the modern equivalent of a social stigma, says a Central London dentist. The worst thing is that it is so easily avoidable, with a simple to follow and a disciplined attitude towards oral hygiene a cure is easily to hand. If you have bad breath you won`t be able to detect it by cupping your hands and sniffing in your breath, this doesn’t work. The best way to tell is to talk to someone up close and watch their facial expressions, that will usually give the game away. Bad breath is caused by a number of problems, and they are not all related to your oral hygiene regime. Diabetes and Liver problems are also responsible for bad breath in some people, in that case they are a warning sign that your have a health problem or even worse an infected liver or a bad diabetes regime. In both cases get a doctors advice immediately. Usually though bad breath is caused by eating strong spicy foods such as garlic enhanced meals, but mainly it is caused by rotting food residue trapped in the cavities of the mouth and in between teeth. Acid build up is caused by the food being attacked by bacteria, and this is just the same as a rotting animal carcass under your floor boards. Flossing around the teeth is an essential part of oral hygiene, and this needs to be done throughout the day, especially after a meal or a snack. Drinking water throughout the day is good for the body in general, but in the mouth it keeps acid concentration to a minimum which will also keep decaying material at a minimum. Chewing sugar free gum will also go some way to keeping the saliva glands active, saliva also keeps acid build up down. Follow these simple rules and you will see a great improvement in bad breath problems.

Dentists cannot stress the importance of daily dental hygiene and its positive effects on dental health. Effective brushing and cleaning can help to keep tooth decay and gum disease from destroying your teeth and gums. This happens because effective brushing and flossing removes the plaque which builds up on the teeth and breaks down enamel and gum tissue.

Dentists recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day for three minutes. This should be done with a soft bristled brush for maximum enamel removal and preferably using a brush with a small head for easier access to the difficult to reach areas. The brush should be angled at forty-five degrees to the teeth so that the gums are also brushed but be careful not to press too hard as gum tissue can erode and will not grow back.

It is also important to floss daily to remove bacteria and plaque from the hard to reach areas between teeth and around the base. Much decay begins in these areas and food particles trapped there are often the cause of bad breath. Other cleaning tools are also encouraged such as inter-dental brushes and tongue cleaners. These can help to remove more bacteria keeping the mouth clean.

West London dentists are available to give further cleaning advice and can draw up a cleaning plan on conjunction with a dental hygienist to keep your teeth as healthy as possible. Just by taking a few extra minutes each day to thoroughly clean your teeth you could save yourself the pain and anxiety of dental problems later in life.

Doctors have a thing called a `bedside manner`, and so your dentist should have a similar `manner`, the good news is that most dentists have been on courses to achieve just that. According to a dentist in London’s W1 area this attitude is now paying off big time. The problem in the past has always been that dentists don’t do home visits, mainly because they need their surgery equipment in order to treat you for around 90% of problems. The new `manner` comes in the form of many factors, and one factor is the way they are now pushing preventative dental care. We all tend to think of a dentist as a cash making business, a business that hopes we will have lots of problems that they can treat us for. However, we couldn’t be further from the truth as our dentists have always been approachable to discuss preventative programs. Maybe it was the fact that not many dentists are available on the NHS, and that we tend to think talking to them will send up the bill. In recent years the Dental Association have been pushing the benefits of giving patients good advice to encourage them into a healthy and disciplined regime of oral hygiene. Believe it or not your dentist doesn’t want to see you that often, they are not being horrible, just more caring as every time you visit they feel they aren’t doing their job properly. The dental hygiene nurses have also been on courses to improve their relationship with the patients, if they can get you to be more aware then they will also feel a lot of job satisfaction. It also means that more people get registered with a dentist which can only be a good thing.

As a parent, looking after your child’s teeth is very important. Teeth can be very fragile in the developing years so it is crucial you give your child the best start for a life of healthy teeth. Developing good strong teeth and good oral hygiene habits early on can be fundamental to a life of avoiding unpleasant dental treatment.

City of London dentist have several key rules for parents to follow to best help their child develop healthy teeth. Firstly, it is vital to teach your children good habits early on. Start by helping your child to clean their teeth or do it for them if they are too young. Once they are old enough to start cleaning by themselves, make sure they are doing it thoroughly but avoid being pushy or making it seem like a chore. If your child is reluctant, turn it into a game or reward them for doing it well. It is also important to teach your child the importance of flossing, as this too is crucial to oral hygiene in their future.

Make sure your child is eating as healthily as possible as this can have an impact on how healthy their teeth are and eating the right kind of food can protect their teeth from decay and disease. Avoid giving them food or drink that is high in sugar and try to encourage them to eat fruit and vegetables as often as possible and drink water.

Perhaps most importantly, however, is the need to take your child to the dentist regularly. City of London dentists recommend that children visit the dentist at east every six-months depending on their teeth. This can help to prevent any infection and ensure that child’s teeth are developing correctly. Dentists will also be able to give parents advice about how best to look after children’s teeth.

Daily dental hygiene is crucial to keeping your teeth free from plaque and food debris that cause decay, disease and bad breath. Dentists recommend that you brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush for at least three minutes. Using a brush with a smaller head will also allow greater mobility allowing you to clean teeth more effectively. However, as well as brushing dentists recommend that you also floss at least once a day. Flossing is important because it cleans the areas in between the teeth and below the gum line that are almost impossible to clean by just brushing.

Flossing also removes food trapped between teeth that decays and releases foul odours, the main cause of over ninety per cent of cases of bad breath. It is also true that the hard to reach areas between teeth are often the location of the first signs of decay, especially if you are not flossing regularly.

Other tools that are useful for daily hygiene as recommended by dentists are tongue cleaners and inter-dental brushes. These also help to remove more bacteria, helping to keep the mouth as clean as possible. But without a doubt the most important thing to remember is that even if your are using all these tools and techniques you still need to be seeing a London W1 dentist at least every six-months to make sure your teeth are as healthy as possible.

Periodontal disease, otherwise known as gum disease, is responsible for more lost teeth in the UK than any other type of dental problem, including tooth decay. Therefore it is very important that you are able to recognise the signs of gum disease and act upon them as soon as possible.

Gum disease is caused by a build up of plaque on the teeth and gums. Plaque contains bacteria and food debris that starts to decay releasing acids, which erode tooth enamel and destroy gum tissue. This destruction of tissue begins with a gradual irritation leading to inflammation and soreness. At this point, periodontal disease is known as gingivitis and is easily treated by a dentist or with improved oral hygiene. If it is allowed to continue to worsen however, it becomes the more serious periodontitis, which requires much more serious treatment. When it has reached this stage there may be irreparable damage to the gum tissue, which may need to be treated with antibiotics or even surgical tissue removal. This might even include a stay in hospital.

On top of this, badly damaged gum tissue can lead to a loosening of support for teeth and the spread of infection. Gum disease has recently been linked to heart disease which is just another reason to make sure you are doing something about it. Visit a London W1 dentist every six-months to check for gum disease and try to improve your oral hygiene by better brushing and flossing. Gum disease is easily avoided with the right precautions and can be very serious if these are ignored.

There are many reasons to opt for a teeth whitening treatment from a City of London dentist. Teeth whitening is one of the safest and most dramatic cosmetic dentistry procedures that can radically alter your appearance. In the past teeth whitening has been very expensive but as more dentists offer the treatment to meet growing demand, it is now possible to have your teeth whitened even if you are on a budget.

Teeth whitening is especially useful for patients with stained or discoloured teeth. Teeth can become discoloured for many reasons. In some cases it can be due to lifestyle choices such as smoking or drinking too much red wine or coffee. But in other cases it may be due to a medical condition or treatment, because of the effects of fluoride or simply because of the age. As we get older our teeth tend to lose their natural colour, which makes whitening teeth have the subconscious effect of making the patient look younger and healthier.

Whitening works by applying an active agent, usually hydrogen peroxide, to the stained surface of the tooth. The peroxide gradually seeps into the enamel that forms the outer surface of the teeth and turns any discoloured areas white. The process will be more effective the longer the peroxide is in contact with the enamel, so longer treatments tend to have more dramatic results.

There are very few safety concerns as long as patients have treatment form a trained dentist. Some over-the-counter products can be dangerous as peroxide can be damaging to soft tissue if it comes into direct contact.

A dental crown is a simple alternative to more complicated dental solutions, says a W1 London dentist. A crown is exactly that in every sense of the word, and we all know that a crown, like wallpaper, can cover up a multitude of sins. Problems that a crown can solve range from discoloured, chipped, cracked and misaligned teeth, although it isn’t always the answer in some extreme cases, it is in most. The procedure is as simple as the solution itself, and involves, in most cases, just 2 visits to the dentist. On the first the dentist will assess if the damaged tooth can be repaired by a crown, if it can he will then take a series of photographs and do some simple tests, all of which are completely painless. The crown is made for that specific tooth, and that specific problem whatever it is. A colouration test is done to make sure that the crown will fit in naturally with the surrounding teeth. When the crown is ready to be fitted the dentist will numb the area and the tooth, then he will grind down the front of the tooth, they will take just enough off so that the thickness of the crown will fit on perfectly to keep the height. The crown is simply then cemented to the tooth and that’s it. Maintenance is simple and you can clean the crown as you do the other teeth. A crown mustn’t be confused with a veneer which is a completely different thing altogether, a veneer is a much thinner version and is more a cosmetic device, where as a crown will solve a lot more serious problems and last a lot longer. Most dental surgeries provide this service, and some consultations are free.

A simple solution of antibiotics followed by a new regime of oral hygiene is a good start. It would be safe to assume that the old regime is not working, as most problems of infection in the mouth are caused by an insufficient method of cleaning the teeth. An abscess is generally caused by bacteria seeping into a cut on the gums, this in turn is the result of another gum infection that softens the tissue and makes it prone to abrasive cuts as a result of vigorous brushing. Just fixing the problem won’t usually make it go away, it will keep coming back. Tooth ache is also generally caused by an infection contracted in much the same manner. Gum disease is the long term effect of a lax regime in oral care, and it is the basis of most if not all of the problems we have with our teeth. The best way forward is to start cleaning out teeth the correct way, this will keep bacteria and acid production to a minimum and that in itself will be go a long way to keeping infection at bay. Gingivitis is a prolonged disease of the gums and is not curable, the best we can do is to keep it from progressing to a higher level, brushing throughout the day, flossing and rinsing after all meals and snacks is a good way of achieving this. It doesn’t have be a mouthwash every time, just drinking small amounts of water will stop acid build up, and chewing gum will also help to neutralise acid build up, and in turn tartar build up around the base of the teeth.

Sleep apnea is a disorder that similar to snoring happens unconsciously during sleep and can be the source of misery to anyone who has to live with a sufferer. Like snorers, apnea sufferers are almost completely unaware that they are making any noise or suffering with the condition unless a loved one tells them.

However, sleep apnea has a slightly darker side than snoring. Whereas snoring is the sound of an obstruction in the airway when breathing, apnea is the sound a person makes when they have completely stopped breathing. This may happen several times during the night and in some cases hundreds of times. The cessation of breathing that causes apnea has two main causes. The most common is caused when the airway is blocked by a collapsing soft palate at the back of the throat. This temporarily stops the person breathing before it rights itself. This is known as obstructive sleep apnea. The other type of sleep apnea is called central sleep apnea and is caused when a malfunction in the main respiratory area of the brain forgets to send a message to the lungs to breath.

Sleep apnea can be the underlying cause of stress and anxiety in everyday life as it prevents the sufferer getting the necessary amount of proper sleep. More worryingly though is the fact that it can put an enormous strain on the heart which can lead to heart disease and even fatal heart attacks. If you or a loved one is suffering from sleep apnea it is important that they see a City of London dentist for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.
